Organizations
Below are described the most important cooperative agencies in international aviation. These are fundamental for the operation to function and here are the governing rules and regulations.
CANSO
Civil Air Navigation Services Organization is a global interest organization primarily for suppliers of air navigation services. LFV is a member of CANSO. CANSO's members handle over 85% of the world's air traffic.
The goal is to collect, develop and market new strategies for improving air navigation services on the ground and in the air. An important mission is to develop, together with customers (for example various airlines and their organizations), air navigation services that meet their needs.
EASA
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is an EU authority and the joint European air safety authority. EASA continues to take over more and more of the licensing and monitoring tasks that apply to airlines and similar actors, which were previously managed by the European countries' own air safety authorities. In the early 2010s, corresponding tasks for both air navigation services and airports will be taken over.
EUROCONTROL
EUROCONTROL is a multinational organization for aviation safety in the airspace, of which almost 40 European countries are members. Despite its name, EUROCONTROL is not part of the EU, but instead is a completely separate international organization. EUROCONTROL, which does not have legislative authority, works in various ways to harmonize and develop air navigation services in the member countries.
An important task for EUROCONTROL is to support the EU commission in its legislative work. The organisation also has more operational assignments, including collecting the fees that the airlines pay for air navigation services used in non-stop flights. In addition, EUROCONTROL runs a command center located in Maastricht, which controls traffic at high elevations over Benelux and western Germany. The headquarters are in Brussels.
IATA
International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an international organization with airlines as members. IATA handles rules and the like for commercial passenger flights. Among other things, ticketing systems have been standardized and airport and airline codes have been created. IATA was established in the Hague in 1919 under the name International Air Traffic Association. In 1945 the present association was formed in Havana, Cuba, and now has its headquarters in Montreal, Canada. The organization has over 270 members from 140 countries.
ICAO
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a UN agency with the mission of contributing to increased aviation safety through joint regulations in air navigation services, but also where airport design, certification of pilots, flight technicians, air traffic controllers, airworthiness of aircraft, rules for how to plan and conduct flights are concerned. Most of the world's nations are members of ICAO. ICAO conducts inspections of member nation authorities to ensure that they fulfil their areas of responsibility and work uniformly.
